Part of the shell for my Honda CRV (2009 model) key broke and I needed to get this replaced. Here’s a picture (I tried using sticky tape but the key bends when I insert it in the ignition hole):<\/p>\n

Replacing the Honda Key with programming costs around $100.00. I decided to find a cheaper alternative so I thought I’d just get a shell replaced and get it cut since the electronic parts were still working. I ended up saving about $60 so I thought I’d share with some of my readers what you need. NOTE: If you’ve completely lost the key then you have no choice but to get it duplicated (including the electronic module) but in my case I just needed the shell replaced.<\/p>\n

Firstly, you need to purchase a shell key – you need to make sure you buy the correct one. Just check on how many buttons your existing key has and make sure it’s the same on the new shell. Just type in ebay: HONDA CRV SHELL CASE. I bought mine for about $5.00.\u00a0Then once you receive the shell, I had to cut some of the plastic inside the shell key in order for the electronic module to fit in. Have a look at the picture.<\/p>\n

Then you need to find a locksmith to cut the key. When I rang a few locksmiths to get quotes, they all said that they couldn’t do it because Honda Keys are hard to cut. The only company that was able to cut it was Mister Mint. This costed around $35.00 but the locksmith mentioned a few times that it’s not guaranteed that the key will work since I purchased the shell. He said that he will try his best to duplicate it and if it doesn’t work then I may need to purchase another shell that they supply.<\/p>\n

I was very lucky and the key worked once it was cut. Just make sure that you don’t have the electronic module inside the new shell when you give it to the locksmith to duplicate as it may get damaged. So what an experience – I saved around $60 but what a drama.<\/p>\n
