So after removing the case and plugging in the new Kensington 4GB DDR 1333Mhz memory module in the motherboard slot I had all smiles on my face. I was very confident that my PC would run much faster after the install.

So after powering the PC on, I had a message from the BIOS that the amount of memory had changed. Thanks for picking that up BIOS – it meant that I installed it correctly. After loading Windows, I thought that I’d better check to make sure the Operating System also picked up the memory change. So I went into Computer Properties to check the amount of memory – it showed 8GB. Hurray… that was my initial thought. But then I decided to also check the task manager to see how much memory it picked up and it was 2985MB. It was one of those “WHAT THE!” moments.

That’s not right, I thought to myself. Actually it was more like “%@^&%^$”. I decided to do a bit of reading to figure out what was going on. After some researching, I found out something that that was quite interesting. Out of all the years I’ve been in IT industry I didn’t know that Windows 7 32-bit can only use 2.92GB of memory. So I went back to my Computer Properties to check if this was correct:

Yep – the OS showed that 2.92GB was only usable. As a result, I need to upgrade my operating system to 64-bit. Damn you OS!

Now it’s time for me to buy Windows 7 64-bit and reinstall all my apps. This will be fun!

DO YOU LIKE WHAT YOU'VE READ?

Join our subscription list and receive our content right in your mailbox.
