On the weekend, I went with my wife and kids to Ikea to buy a large mirror for the dining area. Something that I promised I would get my wife a few months ago. The mirror that she wanted was called\u00a0HEMNES\u00a0http:\/\/www.ikea.com\/au\/en\/catalog\/products\/80171842\/<\/a>\u00a0Here’s a picture below:<\/p>\n

Sometimes I get a bit nervous hanging things on a plasterboard wall because the last time I hanged a cabinet… it fell in the middle of the night causing damage to the nearest door and desk that it fell on. That’s another story that I don’t really want to get into detail right now. Let’s just leave what happened in the past for another post.<\/p>\n

Anyways, the weight of the mirror was 12 kgs and after trying to explain to my wife that the metal anchor for a plasterboard supported 10 kgs and this was sufficient (if you use two it should support a weight of 20 kgs?) – she was not convinced .<\/p>\n

So after a bit of researching I found another anchor that supported 20 kgs so I made a trip out to Bunnings and got two of these:\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When I came back I started to use my mathematics skills to measure and work out the best location for the anchors. So I came up with this diagram:\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0After marking the location of the anchors on the wall, I triple confirmed with the wife on the measurements between the two anchors. I believe this was the most important measurement and if this was wrong, then I would have an unhappy wife. I started with the right hand side first and easily installed the anchor. When I started inserting the first screw I noticed that the toggle wasn’t locking in. So what did I do? I started removing the screw and then the anchor to see what was wrong…. my first mistake. What ever you do don’t remove the anchor from the wall otherwise you start damaging the plasterboard and then when you try to reinsert the anchor back into the hole, it won’t be as secure. I decided to use the screw from the second anchor and this seemed to have fixed the problem. The toggle locked in!<\/p>\n

I moved on to the second anchor and then came the second problem. There was \u00a0a stud and the location of where anchor was meant to go was actually on the edge of the stud. I ended not using the second anchor and just used a screw. After mounting the second screw I was ready to put the mirror on. That’s when I needed the help of my wife to hold one of the ends of the mirror so that I could mount the other end. When I got one of the ends in, I felt like I was on top of the world. I just need to get the other end in and that would have been it… but then came the third problem. For some reason, the screw was slightly off and was not positioned perfectly where the hole need to go in. So with the help from the wife I took the mirror down for assessment. I looked for the measuring tape and realised that was my problem. The metal edge of the tape was actually bent and therefore this cause the measurements to be skewed. Oh great. \u00a0Lesson learnt – BUY A GOOD MEASURING TAPE.<\/p>\n

To resolved this I basically positioned the screw in an angle and that fixed the problem. See my accomplishment below. Who would have thought that mounting the mirror was such a headache and troublesome.<\/p>\n
