Socomec UPS not switching to Normal Mode

Emercengy Power Off

We recently purchased a brand new Socomec Netys HE (model NET010-HE) and after spending several hours to work out why it wouldn’t turn on, I accidentally figured out the problem. First, let me describe the symptoms:

  • Installed the UPS as per the instruction manual
  • When it is switched on from the power point the unit turns on
  • The status at the front says STBY
  • Trying to press the power button just seems to make a long beeping noise – it doesn’t go to Normal Mode
  • Tried going into the menu settings but doesn’t save the settings
  • Connected USB and Serial cable to computer and UPS and computer cannot detect the UPS
  •  The battery indicator light seems to indicate that it’s full but when we switch it off from the power point the UPS switches off ie doesn’t use the Battery

Even after speaking with a Socomec tech, they suggested to have the unit replaced. I wanted to avoid this because the UPS is damn heavy and I wasn’t planning to carry this back to the office and then organise a courier to send it back. After spending a few hours trying to resolve the issue, I threw the towel in. Yes, I gave up which is something I normally don’t do but because of the circumstances I was in – especially being at a clients site I didn’t want to spend all my time there.
So when I started packing the UPS back into the box, I noticed a green little object at the back of the UPS that was inserted in the EPO port. This is the object:

Emercengy Power Off

I didn’t know what the EPO (Emergency Power Off) port was for and what this little green object did – looking at the photo the object reminded me of a little space ship or something like that. Anyways, I removed it and the UPS started working normally. So the lesson I’ve learnt is to visually inspect the unit and question anything that you are unsure about.

The manual didn’t include anything about this EPO plug and after doing some research I discovered this plug is used in an emergency to shut down the UPS battery. So image in  a flood, the power is switched off but the battery is still running and powering the devices connected to it. Using this EPO plug will cause the battery power to shut off.
