Am I a Lifestyle Entrepreneur?

This question never crossed my mind until recently and I realised that maybe… I might be one. If not, it’s maybe something I will aspire to become in the near future! Basically, a lifestyle entrepreneur is someone who starts a business venture with the intention of changing their lifestyle (the way they live their life) rather than just trying to make lots of money. Any amount of money to pay for your daily living expenses in my eyes is a decent amount.

The Internet has made it easy for lifestyle entrepreneurs to start their online businesses and share their journey with other entrepreneurs – I feel so lucky to live in this Internet era. I decided to share some of my experiences and some areas to think about:

The freedom

When you  become a lifestyle entrepreneur you generally have the freedom to decide what you want to do and when you want to do it. You basically live your life in your own terms. The flexibility to decide your own hours and who you want to work with is ultimately your own decision. That’s the freedom you don’t get when you work for a company. You are mandated by a 9am – 5pm job where your employer designates specific tasks. You also have to work with people within your organisation or with clients you may not like or enjoy spending time with. It does eventually become a cliche and most people want to escape this viscous cycle.

I’ve been working on my own business for a few years now but before I made that decision to start a business I was like everyone else and did work a 9 -5 job (sometimes even longer hours and weekends). My turning point was when I started a business TAFE course and realised there was a gap in the market and hence an opportunity to start a business.

The freedom to work on my own business did give me the opportunity to spend more quality time looking after my kids. I was able to see them grow, especially my sweet daughter and my son which I was probably not able to do if I worked a 9-5 job.

The love

It’s the love and passion that drives Lifestyle Entrepreneurs to achieve the goals they set when starting their business. Although one cannot quantify and show what love actually is, I believe that the results of any business is the output of love. When you spend all those hours working on your business and you may end up with just 1 client, that’s the labour of your love. As you grow that love, no doubt the number of clients will also grow. With love, you have to give it time, I’ve always heard the saying that sometimes it may even take 5 years until your business starts making profit!

Personally, what I love about businesses is the ability to create SOMETHING out of nothing. What I mean by this is turning an idea into reality and watching it grow.

The pain

Love and pain go hand in hand. There are struggles when you decide to take on the journey of a Lifestyle Entrepreneur and it’s something that one must experience in order to overcome all the hurdles in business. This includes raising capital, finding leads, learning new skills, managing clients and their expectations, making money which can lead to survival and the list goes on. Yes it’s not easy! Sometimes it’s a give and take situation, where you have to sacrifice and endure to achieve success.

The money

So “How much do lifestyle entrepreneurs make?”. I guess the tax man is the only one that will be able to answer you this question. There are not that many lifestyle entrepreneurs that will be upfront with you and tell you how much they make in a year. I have seen some that actually provide a detailed snapshot of their monthly income and they break it down on how they made that amount of money. Either way, what they achieve is something that you should aim for but it may not be a true reflection of what you will earn. Some have been doing it for years and have had the experience to build a business that can earn money from the get go.

The bait

I call this the bait because you can easily get reeled in quick to spend some of your hard earn money to learn the skillset of selling online or starting a business. Don’t get caught up with buying every PDF book or course for starting a business. The simplest thing to do, is learn what others are doing well and make it better. Only spend money when you need it. Remember, it’s not easy making your first $1.

Generally you would get something that’s free like a tutorial to teach you on how to do something and then the next steps would cost you fee, so watch out. Don’t get me wrong, no one forces you to buy anything (just ignore the annoying popups), it’s your own judgement that makes the final purchasing decision so don’t blame anyone else except for… the popup. You hopefully know what I mean.

FINAL REMINDER

Being a Lifestyle Entrepreneurs is not for everyone. Once you make a decision to follow this path, make sure you NEVER regret your decision. Also, there’s no shame if you return to a 9-5 job as well.

NO WORDS OF WISDOM

In this post I didn’t want to reference or mention anyone in particular because it would be so unfair. I believe each and every Lifestyle Entrepreneur has made a difference in their own life and a pat on the back is all that is needed. If you’re starting your Lifestyle Entrepreneur journey I wish you all the best as I know it’s not an easy path to take. Good luck and remember to smile. 🙂
