Backup your SMS messages to your Gmail

I frequently receive SMS messages with important information that I sometimes forget to extract. When running a business, you need to make sure you have all information available (unless you have good memory). Like for example someone sent me an email address via SMS about a year ago which I needed to retrieve. Was I able to retrieve it from somewhere? No.
So I thought to myself, what’s the best way to store these SMS messages and then whilst I was looking at my Gmail, I had a light bulb moment. Yes, why can’t I use Gmail as an archiving SMS system. So that’s when my research started.
So I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with an Android OS. I went to Google Play and did a search for SMS backup… and that’s when I found the perfect app. It’s called SMS Backup+ It’s free! Here’s a description of what it does:
Automatically backup SMS, MMS and call log entries using a separate label in Gmail / Google Calendar. It is also possible to restore SMS and call log entries back to the phone (MMS not supported yet).
Remember to enable IMAP in Gmail and set the correct time/zone.
Please note that auto backup might not work reliably when SMS Backup+ is installed on the SD card. Future version will hopefully fix this, in the meantime please move it back to phone memory if possible.
For those of you worried about app permissions: there is a detailed explanation in the FAQ section of the website.
A few people have asked about a donate option – there is one (via PayPal), it’s hidden in the “About” screen.
Also, please consult the FAQ on the website before sending me an email.
So basically, what the app does, is synch your SMS message to your Gmail account in a Folder in Gmail called SMS. The email contacts the mobile number (or if the mobile number is in your contacts) it will show you the name of the person who sent the SMS. The content of the email then has the message contained in the SMS. WHat this means is that you can then use Gmail to search for a specific email that has a certain keyword. Isn’t that great! Currently, the app doesn’t support MMS backups but it works great just for SMS. Awesome work!
