You need to carefully consider the font style that best represents you, your brand, and your company’s voice. But how do you do that?
Stick to Your Brand
A casual eatery will have a much different voice than a fine dining establishment.
The way that voice is portrayed depends on the type of font you’re using.
A fun, looping text isn’t going to represent a Michelin-star restaurant very well, but it may demonstrate the fun-loving nature of a casual dining establishment.
So analyze what you want your brand to say, and how you want to say it. You’ll be able to identify a font that coincides with your brand identity and be able to represent your company through words as well as visually.
A good rule of thumb is to limit your font selection to three different types:

One font style for subtitles and subheadings.
And one font style for the body of your website.
You can play with web design using different fonts, but you don’t want to have too many drastically differing fonts on your website (unless you specialize in fonts.)

A serious medical website that imparts the latest news to internet users represents a different emotion than a storytelling food blog. The differences between these two types of websites mean that they’re going to use strikingly different font types.
Think of the same scenario for your own business. Reading serious news in a fun font like Papyrus is not going to get your message across as effectively as a modern, easy-to-read font like Georgia.
So take the time to consider the emotion you’re representing. There are plenty of fonts that fall into the middle ground between serious and fun without sacrificing on readability or visual design.
Do Your Research
The best way to see a font at work is to research.
Spend time examining other websites and see what kinds of fonts they’re using. Try to find sites that don’t use an effective font. Find sites that utilize fonts and variety in a way that sells their brand.
Having a visual idea of how a font can work for and against you on your website will give you a great foundation to build upon, and give you a strong idea of what to do and what not to do.

Stick to One Family
Fonts typically fall into three different categories: serif, sans serif, and script. These three categories encompass most of the internet’s fonts, with a few exceptions.
Serif fonts have a ‘serif’ at the end of a stroke. A serif is a small, decorative line that finishes the stroke of the letter with a flourish. Popular serif fonts include Times New Roman and Georgia.
A sans serif font has its style cleverly hidden within its name: sans serif fonts are fonts without (sans) a serif.
These modern fonts are seen all over websites, and their sharp, clean lines are best suited to computer and mobile screens. Examples include Helvetica and Arial.
Script fonts resemble natural handwriting. The letters in a script font tend to connect, like cursive handwriting.
Script examples are Freestyle or French script fonts.
Choosing a Font Is Up to You
You’re the only person that can decide what font to use, but the good news is the best fonts to use for websites can be easily changed.
A font is not a permanent feature of your website, so if you hate what you choose, it’s easy to change it.
Keep these points in mind, however, and you’ll choose the right font the first time around.
