Yesterday one of my websites was attacked. It was a brute force attack but fortunately they gave up and moved on. How did I know I was getting attacked? Here’s some stats and logs that seemed very unusual.

If you look at the figures, yesterday there were 1212 unique visitors with 21672 page views. Those figures raised a few eye brows as I normally receive around 200 unique visitors and what about page views 21672 – that’s just insane. So I looked a bit deeper and looked at the logs which showed the following:

Yes, I use WordPress for my websites and someone was trying to login to the website. Fortunately I make sure that I always install or run the latest patches and have a strong password. If you look at the IP addresses, they seem quite random.

Finally, hacker – LEAVE MY WEBSITE ALONE! Now, for those of you who also run WordPress, there are quite a number of strategies to increase the security on your website and I’ll talk about these in a separate post. But in the meantime the most important tip I can give you is make sure you always backup your database and your files.
